Observation Period

November 2000 early August 2010

// Overview

Actions of a person that the person has no memory of, left behind as numbers and traces — a file gathering material of that kind. Two copies are bound here, ten years apart. The later one is a copy of an advice thread posted to an anonymous message board. The one who started it was an office worker who had begun using a pedometer after a health checkup, and for seven weeks they kept reporting that on the nights they wear it to sleep, and only those nights, steps they have no memory of remain on the morning display. The count is nearly identical every night, and the thread holds a calculation that puts the distance, worked out from stride length, at roughly the way from their home to an intersection on a national route. Over the seven weeks, the tone of their reports gradually changes, and there they stop. What became of them afterward has not been traced. The copy is said to have been taken from a repost on a personal archive of old threads, and which board it originally stood on is not known. The earlier one is a copy of a saved log, one night’s worth, from a chat room attached to a personal site. One of those present spoke of the window of their room going away, and of going out at night, in the tone of seasonal small talk. That the night is something one does not remember is, for them, simply how things are put. Which site this one came from is likewise not known. There are said to be other materials along the same line, and they are added here as the route of each copy is verified. A cross-check has been attempted with another series in which the next morning’s share is printed out during the night.
