(Said to be a copy of a housekeeping notebook. An excerpt centered on the lines concerning the residential smoke alarm; the dates are as they appear in the notebook.)

June 1, 2023
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. Ask about re-screening the north window only. Buy more barley-tea packs.

February 1, 2024
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. One more can of kerosene will do for the season. Dry cleaning pickup Thursday.

(A line of the same shape follows, one for the first of every month.)

April 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. The way the end of Normal falls away is like the half-reply my husband gives.

May 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. A breath. A machine shouldn’t need to take a breath, but it seemed to take one before saying Normal. Air the blankets before putting them away.

June 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. The pitch was different this month. My husband’s is a little lower. Farther than last month, I think.

July 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. Trial run of the air conditioners; only the bedroom one is loud.
My husband only nodded through dinner.

September 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. There is no August line not because I forgot, but because I pressed it and there was nothing to write.
I have not heard him laugh at the TV in a while.

October 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. Recorded the test voice with the phone. I meant to have my mother hear it. Played it back, and only the ordinary machine voice was there. Same when I recorded it over. I didn’t send it.

November 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. A call at night from someone at his company. Out in the hallway my husband’s voice was lively enough to tell through the door.

December 1, 2025
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. His voice again this month. I said, it’s starting to sound like your voice. He was quiet a moment, then: is that so.
The replies in this house went down by one more today.

My husband replaced the whole unit with a new one. I didn’t ask him to. First check out of the box, it rang with the same habit partway through. The same up to where the end falls away. Past that, the machine voice.

February 3, 2026
Called the maker’s inquiry desk. There is no individual variation in the voice, they said. Sent the recording too and had them listen. An ordinary voice, they said. A polite person.
I will stop pressing it.

March 1, 2026
Dry cleaning, Thursday. Use up the kerosene before putting the stove away.

April 16, 2026
Fire-equipment inspection day. A serviceman goes around pressing the button in every unit. Ours was pressed too. From the stepladder he said, it rings with a nice voice. I smiled and let it pass. He lined his shoes up in the entryway before he left. A friendly sort.

April 18, 2026
In the middle of the night, on the way back from the bathroom, in the hallway: Normal. Nobody pressed it. My husband didn’t wake. I stood under the ceiling a while.

April 19, 2026
Called the maker. This model has no function for sounding a test on its own, they say. I see, I said, and hung up.

May 1, 2026
Smoke alarm check. It was the machine voice. I pressed it three more times then and there. All three, nobody’s voice. It went back. Trash days are irregular through the holidays.
Not that my husband has started talking. I could not remember when I had last heard his voice in person.

June 1, 2026
Smoke alarm check. Battery fine. My husband’s voice. Buy more barley-tea packs.

(On the very last page of the notebook there is a single line with no date.)

If I stop, I feel this house will have nowhere left where I can hear my husband’s voice.
