D-0004 Our smoke alarm rings with a nice voice

// Overview

The test voice of a residential smoke alarm — Normal — is said to sometimes come to resemble a voice of the household. With each monthly press of the test button it resembles it a little more, and recordings hold nothing but the standard machine voice. The maker’s inquiry desk answers that there is no individual variation in the voice. What was taken in are all copies: at the center, a housekeeping memo kept in one unit, and alongside it, internal mail from the maker’s inquiry desk, a letter that reached the desk from another region, and the notebook of someone in the fire-equipment inspection trade. Across the copies, the one point where the writers overlap is an inspection.
