My child (3) knocks on the window

1 OP 17/11/06 (Mon) 17:52
This is about my son, 3, first year of preschool.
In the evening he knocks on the living room window from the inside. Knock knock, with his knuckles. He’ll be in the middle of playing, then suddenly get up, go to the window, knock, and go back to playing.
At first it was maybe once a month, but for the last two weeks or so it’s been every day. I’m making dinner, so I only hear it from the kitchen.
He doesn’t cry or look scared. He’s normal.
Has anyone’s child gone through a phase like this?

2 Anon 17/11/06 (Mon) 18:04
He probably just likes the sound~
Some kids treat the glass door like a drum

3 Anon 17/11/06 (Mon) 18:10
Maybe there’s a cat or a bird outside? Evenings are when the cats come through the gardens

4 Anon 17/11/06 (Mon) 18:31
Ours did that too. They get bored of it quickly.
More importantly, be careful the glass doesn’t break. We had one close call

5 OP 17/11/06 (Mon) 21:15
Thank you.
The drum thing, that makes sense. He’s not hitting it hard, so I don’t think it’ll break. He uses his knuckles, not his palm. It really does sound like a knock.

6 OP 17/11/07 (Tue) 18:40
He knocked again today.
I thought it might be a cat, so after he knocked I went out and looked at the garden and the road, but there was nothing. It was already dark, just the streetlight on.
He doesn’t look outside after he knocks. He goes straight back to playing.

7 Anon 17/11/07 (Tue) 19:02
Sorry to jump in.
My older child has an autism spectrum diagnosis. There’s something called stereotyped behavior, repeating the same movement, like flapping their hands or tapping the same spot.
But from what you’ve written, your son’s seems a bit different. Going over once in the middle of playing and coming back isn’t what I know it to look like.
If it’s bothering you, ask at the three-year-old checkup, or at the public health center. It’s nothing to be afraid of.

8 OP 17/11/07 (Tue) 21:33
>>7 Thank you. That was very kind of you to explain.
His three-year-old checkup is next month, so I’ll ask the health nurse then.

9 Anon 17/11/08 (Wed) 08:15
Boy, 3, and lately in the evenings he just lines up his toy trains over and over.
Evenings are just that kind of time, aren’t they

10 Anon 17/11/08 (Wed) 12:47
>>9 I know. Evenings are the worst for fussing, recorded kids’ shows get us through

11 Anon 17/11/09 (Thu) 17:58
been reading and this stuck with me so writing it down
my daughter does the same thing, she’s 5
only in the evening
knock knock then a little gap then one more knock
then she comes back

12 OP 17/11/09 (Thu) 18:20
>>11 Oh.
Ours is three too. There’s a gap between the second and the third.
It’s the same.

13 Anon 17/11/09 (Thu) 18:33
Three is just how you knock lol

14 Anon 17/11/09 (Thu) 23:50
Kids all knock alike. They’re copying how grown-ups knock

15 Anon 17/11/10 (Fri) 12:33
Maybe a knocking game is going around at preschool? One kid starts and it spreads to all of them. Kendama was like that

16 OP 17/11/10 (Fri) 19:10
>>15 I asked in the contact book. They said nobody does it at preschool. The teacher wrote that she’s never seen it either.

17 Anon 17/11/10 (Fri) 19:44
this is 11
didnt think it was worth asking the preschool but I’ll ask
also not sure this matters but we’re up north so the windows are double
what my daughter knocks on is the inner one in the living room

18 Anon 17/11/10 (Fri) 20:02
Sorry to change the subject. Has everyone done their Shichi-Go-San photos?
Ours is this weekend and we’re arguing about whether to go in the kimono on the day or do a studio on a separate day

19 Anon 17/11/10 (Fri) 20:30
>>18 Separate day. On the day they get tired in the kimono and cry (speaking from experience)

20 Anon 17/11/11 (Sat) 09:12
>>18 Did it on the day and regretted it. Photos on another day

21 Anon 17/11/11 (Sat) 09:40
>>18 We went straight to the photo studio from the shrine. She fell asleep in the kimono and waking her up was a nightmare

22 Anon 17/11/12 (Sun) 16:22
>>1 How’s it going since?

23 OP 17/11/12 (Sun) 17:30
>>22 He knocked on the weekend too. Same time as weekdays. A little after five.
Same on days my husband’s home. My husband says “it’s just a phase.”

24 Anon 17/11/13 (Mon) 18:15
Um, so my younger one (two and a half, a girl), I only noticed today but she was doing the living room window…
Three times, and I think it’s the same gap as the two of you. She was probably doing it before and I just never noticed, but I was reading this and thought no way and went to look and there she was (^^;)

25 Anon 17/11/13 (Mon) 18:27
Tens of thousands of people read this site. Two or three overlapping is just coincidence

26 Anon 17/11/13 (Mon) 18:40
Doesn’t do it (boy, 4). For what it’s worth

27 Anon 17/11/14 (Tue) 07:40
If you worry too much the child picks up on it

28 OP 17/11/14 (Tue) 18:22
Today I closed the curtains before letting him play.
He knocked on it over the curtain. Three times.

29 Anon 17/11/14 (Tue) 18:35
Knock knock through the curtain, I laughed a little. Sorry

30 OP 17/11/16 (Thu) 18:50
Yesterday I had him play upstairs for the evening and stayed with him.
I went down to bring in the laundry, and when I came back up he wasn’t there. He was downstairs, standing in front of the living room window.
It looked like he’d already finished knocking. When I called him he went back to playing.

31 Anon 17/11/16 (Thu) 19:12
Be careful on the stairs. Three-year-olds go down on their own

32 Anon 17/11/16 (Thu) 19:30
Maybe he was just following you? He went after you when you went to get the laundry

33 OP 17/11/16 (Thu) 21:05
>>32 If he was following me I think he’d have come to where I was, at the drying rack. But it was the living room.
>>31 Yes. We have the rail up.

34 OP 17/11/17 (Fri) 18:44
I asked him.
Who are you knocking for, I said.
He said “the window.” That was all.

35 Anon 17/11/17 (Fri) 18:50
Cute

36 Anon 17/11/17 (Fri) 18:52
The window, haha. I bet he said it with a straight face

37 Anon 17/11/17 (Fri) 19:20
this is 11
asked mine too and she said “window”. that was last week
didnt write it because I didnt know what it meant

38 Anon 17/11/17 (Fri) 19:41
24 here. Mine isn’t old enough to answer that kind of question yet… I asked anyway and she just looked at me and smiled

39 OP 17/11/20 (Mon) 18:31
Today it was the little window beside the front door. First time.
He didn’t knock on the living room window.

40 Anon 17/11/20 (Mon) 18:47
this is 11
ours moved too, hallway window instead of the living room, from today

41 Anon 17/11/20 (Mon) 19:10
Like they planned it lol

42 Anon 17/11/20 (Mon) 19:15
Which way do those windows face? If both houses were the same direction that would be creepy

43 OP 17/11/20 (Mon) 19:24
>>42 Toward the front door. I don’t know the compass direction. It’s not the road side.

44 Anon 17/11/20 (Mon) 19:29
this is 11, the hallway is toward the back garden I think, direction I couldnt tell you

45 Anon 17/11/20 (Mon) 19:38
It’s coincidence. Kids change where they play all the time

46 Anon 17/11/21 (Tue) 10:02
24 here. Yesterday ours was the tatami room window too…
I wasn’t paying attention in the evening, I only remembered this morning reading the thread, but the tatami room is on the road side.

47 Anon 17/11/21 (Tue) 10:15
All three houses on the same day, huh
The directions, though, you can’t compare

48 Anon 17/11/21 (Tue) 12:40
>>7 here.
The repetitive movements I know don’t line up like this.
But I wouldn’t recommend reading it in a frightening direction. Children watch our faces closely. If Mom looks frightened, that’s what the child learns.

49 OP 17/11/21 (Tue) 18:55
>>48 Thank you. I’m acting normal.
Today after he knocked at the front door we had dinner as usual and went to bed as usual.

50 Anon 17/11/22 (Wed) 12:30
When is everyone doing the second flu shot? They told me to leave four weeks after the first

51 Anon 17/11/22 (Wed) 13:15
>>50 If it’s four weeks that’s this week, isn’t it. Next week for us

52 OP 17/11/24 (Fri) 18:58
Today I was washing up at the sink and I got knocked on the back.
Three times. Knock knock, knock.
My hands were wet so I said, hang on a second, and dried them and turned around, and he was already playing in the living room.
He didn’t knock on the window today.

53 Anon 17/11/24 (Fri) 19:05
Knocking on Mom lol

54 Anon 17/11/24 (Fri) 19:11
He just wants attention. They do that when they want you to look at them

55 Anon 17/11/24 (Fri) 19:20
That’s sweet, isn’t it

56 Anon 17/11/24 (Fri) 19:34
Um, wait

57 Anon 17/11/25 (Sat) 08:05
What about >>11’s daughter?

58 Anon 17/11/25 (Sat) 09:30
this is 11 >>57 still knocking on the hallway window

59 OP 17/11/26 (Sun) 17:45
Yesterday and today it was my back. He doesn’t knock on the window.
It’s not the window anymore, it’s me.

60 OP 17/11/28 (Tue) 18:36
I asked him in the bath. Who are you knocking for.
He said “Mommy.”
Then he went straight back to playing in the water.

61 Anon 17/11/28 (Tue) 18:44
Your son is adorable

62 Anon 17/11/28 (Tue) 18:59
Wish I got back-knocks haha

63 Anon 17/11/28 (Tue) 20:05
this is 11, still the hallway today

64 OP 17/11/30 (Thu) 22:18
This is a different thing, but I’m writing it down.
My husband told me. You knock on the window in the night too, he said.
I don’t remember any of it. According to him, for about a week now, a few times, I’ve gotten up in the night, knocked on the bedroom window, and gone back to sleep. Three times, he says.
At first he thought I was imitating our son as a joke, so he didn’t say anything.
He offered to film it. I said no.

65 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 22:31
You’re just half asleep. I’ve been told I sing in my sleep haha

66 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 22:40
You’re tired. Anyone doing evenings alone ends up like that

67 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 22:48
This is getting a bit much. Now the husband’s in it too. Looks like you just want a scary story

68 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 22:55
Wouldn’t it be more reassuring to have him film it? If nothing’s happening it’s a funny story

69 OP 17/11/30 (Thu) 23:10
>>68 I don’t want it filmed.

70 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 23:18
>>69 If you won’t film it, nothing you write here can be checked, can it

71 Anon 17/11/30 (Thu) 23:24
this is 11, I’ll ask my husband too

72 Anon 17/12/01 (Fri) 21:08
this is 11, I asked
he said he doesnt know
and since then he seems kind of annoyed that I asked at all

73 OP 17/12/03 (Sun) 18:02
I asked my husband about the nights and he said, that’s enough.
My son did my back again today. Three times.
The checkup is next week.

74 Anon 17/12/03 (Sun) 18:40
24 here. Today ours was me too, my back instead of the window…
I was making dinner and got three from behind, and when I turned around she was already back in front of the TV

75 Anon 17/12/04 (Mon) 18:22
OP, how are things since?
