D-0007 Where the elevator wants to go

Late at night, a car rises from the first floor carrying no one, stops at a height that falls between the thirteenth and the fourteenth floor, opens its doors, and returns to the first floor. The same round trip is written down again and again. Inspections by the maintenance company found nothing wrong, and on the remote-monitoring side there is no record of the travel at all. What survives are a copy of the logbook the caretaker kept privately, a copy of a binder of the elevator company’s inspection sheets, interviews with several residents, and the like. In the board papers of the time, a single line remains.
